The rocks that protrude
divide the river
into natural rivulets.

After crossing the Atlantic,
we formed a nation
where forbears walked
on needle-covered ground.

The air beneath the pines
bears witness, whispering
of what we have done.

The gray mist that falls
on rich and poor alike—
becrying equality—

cries, “Alas.” And still,
we pretend that debt
is not our call to justice.
