Dying is a gradual diminishing and final vanishing over the horizon of life. When we watch a sailboat leaving port and moving toward the horizon, it becomes smaller and smaller until we can no longer see it. But we must trust that someone is standing on a faraway shore seeing that same sailboat become larger and larger until it reaches its new harbor. Death is a painful loss. When we return to our homes after a burial, our hearts are in grief. But when we think about the One standing at the other shore eagerly waiting to welcome our beloved friend into a new home, a smile can break through our tears.

Hi Holly. I thought this one was especially good.

I’ve never thought of it that way, but it is interesting. I wonder if my Dad sees me getting closer? I wonder if those on the other side feel joy in seeing us on our way to the extent of the sorrow we feel when they are leaving? This really got my brain spinning today.

I like the way the 2 sides of death are presented here. It’s interesting that death can be a letting go and a welcoming at the same time. In any case, when it involves a child of God, it is something that God anticipates, and to me, that’s the most important thing.
Psa 116:15 Precious in the sight of the LORD is the death of his saints.

Hi Jana, I still can’t comment on your blog. I get a strange message that requires more action on my part than I’m going to do right now. I love the image of “the other shore” (the image of “over Jordan”), beacuse heaven for the Christain is just a change of venue. We already have eternal life.
Hi Carol, I like it, too. We have such a sick view of death in our culture. It’s like we don’t really believe there’s the “better place” we speak of. Dying means we’re going home.

This one caused me to shed some more tears
To take a shower in my soul
to wash off the grief grime
of the death that is always with me

Hi Clance’, What a beautiful, poetic way to speak of grief. My prayers are with you.

One of the most beautiful descriptions I’ve read about death. Life doesn’t end here, but is a journey to a greater harbor. Thanks for posting this. I’m saving this in my personal quotes collection.
Peace and blessings to you my friend 🙂
