“You are the only person who can forgive yourself. Once that forgiving has taken place, you can then console yourself with the knowledge that a diamond is the result of extreme pressure… The pressure can make you something quite precious, quite wonderful, quite beautiful and extremely hard.”

I often refer to Maya Angelou as my spiritual and poetic mother. I’ve never met her (though I’ve been in the same room with her a few times), but she was my introduction to poetry… my introduction to writing… my introduction to self-respect and self-worth. You could close your eyes and randomly select any number of her quotes and you’d end up with a good one every time. Thank you for sharing this one today. Stumbling across anything she has said or has written is like a grandmotherly hug to me.

Oh the wisdom that Maya Angelou has to offer. I particularly love this quote. When you first read it, it seems painful – and then once you ponder, it takes on a different mood. Oh Helen, I want to withstand the pressure(s) that the Lord places in my life so that I can become a jewel worthy of His calling.
