Tonight at 8 pm (ET), I will for the final time refrain from watching George W. Bush speak from the Oval Office. Oh, I’ll read the speech. But I won’t watch him. I don’t like looking at him.
**
EDIT: January 16
Ever the warmonger, Bush tried one final time to explain his bad choices. “Our enemies are patient and determined to strike again,” [DUH!] Bush said in a nationally televised address from the White House.” (see more)
Bush could use those lessons from King about how the goal of nonviolence is to make enemies into friends. He, and many others, fail to see the moral highness of this position. Obama may engage in war, but he will not initiate one.
There is no better way celebrate the King Holiday than to oppose violence. King said America must rid herself of racism, poverty, and war. The Fellowship of Reconciliation (FOR), of which King was a member, has issued the following statement:
“The news and images we are receiving from Gaza and southern Israel are horrific. Once again, violence has trumped nonviolence; missiles have shot down cease-fires; civilians including children are killed without compunction. We know that there are few right “sides” to be on in this conflict, but as the death toll approaches 1,000 we cannot stand by. As people committed to justice, peace, and nonviolence we call for an immediate cease fire in the Gaza strip. The Fellowship of Reconciliation has signed on to this statement from the U.S. Campaign to End the Israeli Occupation, and we hope you will join us.
Also, below you will find information about an upcoming advocacy training in Washington, D.C. being led by our partners at Interfaith Peace-Builders and the U.S. Campaign to End the Israeli Occupation. Please consider registering and becoming a more effective advocate for peace in Israel/Palestine.
Send a letter to the President, State Department, and your Members of Congress demanding 1) an unconditional and immediate cease-fire; 2) complete access of humanitarian goods to the Gaza Strip and a lifting of Israel’s siege; and 3) accountability for Israel’s misuse of U.S. weapons as required by the Arms Export Control Act and Foreign Assistance Act.
Click here to read the letter and send it to your elected officials.
To learn more about the situation including other actions you can take to speak out against the ongoing violence in Gaza, visit our blog at FORpeace.net/tag/gaza.”
Support the values King preached. Oppose violence and war.
