Before you knew you owned it
by Alice Walker
Expect nothing. Live frugally
On surprise.
become a stranger
To need of pity
Or, if compassion be freely
Given out
Take only enough
Stop short of urge to plead
Then purge away the need.
Wish for nothing larger
Than your own small heart
Or greater than a star;
Tame wild disappointment
With caress unmoved and cold
Make of it a parka
For your soul.
Discover the reason why
So tiny human midget
Exists at all
So scared unwise
But expect nothing. Live frugally
On surprise.

Knoxville Tennessee
by Nikki Giovanni
I always like summer
Best
you can eat fresh corn
From daddy’s garden
And okra
And greens
And cabbage
And lots of
Barbeque
And buttermilk
And homemade ice-cream
At the church picnic
And listen to
Gospel music
Outside
At the church
Homecoming
And go to the mountains with
Your grandmother
And go barefooted
And be warm
All the time
Not only when you go to bed
And sleep

I enjoyed them too. I like the wise advise of the first poem and I warmed to the homeliness of Knoxville Tennessee.

Thanks, EarthPal. I’ve learned a lot and enjoyed doing posts every day in Black History Month.

Alice Walker is one of my poetry mothers. I started reading her work in the 80s and she is a constant source of inspiration.

Hi Collin, I got to know her novels first, the “In Search of Our Mother’s Gardens,” poetry last. But I do like Alice Walker.

I really like these, helen. the first one is so full of wisdom; and knoxville makes me feel as if I’m runnin through the wild-flower covered fields with nikki, catchin lightning bugs until bedtime.
