The Church often wounds us deeply. People with religious authority often wound us by their words, attitudes, and demands. Precisely because our religion brings us in touch with the questions of life and death, our religious sensibilities can get hurt most easily. Ministers and priests seldom fully realize how a critical remark, a gesture of rejection, or an act of impatience can be remembered for life by those to whom it is directed.
There is such an enormous hunger for meaning in life, for comfort and consolation, for forgiveness and reconciliation, for restoration and healing, that anyone who has any authority in the Church should constantly be reminded that the best word to characterize religious authority is compassion. Let’s keep looking at Jesus whose authority was expressed in compassion.

Helen, Great post! I remember as a child the old saying “Sticks and stones may break my bones but words can never hurt me.” Not true!! Words can and do hurt and even leave scars.
I have seen the very thing happen that is talked about in your post above. I thank God that I have a pastor is who sensitive, compassionate, very patient, and understanding.
P.S. I want to thank you again for your prayers. They are greatly appreciated. God bless you richly

Hi Jolene, Thanks for dropping by. Those who have kind, compassionate pastors are fortunate. Those who have pastors who encourage thinking and questioning are even more fortunate. Those who have pastors who confuse themselves with God and who think knowing Greek makes them somehow closer to Him should be in our prayers.
P.S. I’ll continue my prayers for you. Please include me in yours. We can’t get too much prayer.

It was not until I was an adult that I found out there were pastors who thought they were God. I grew up being able to ask questions. Now I realize my husband is a rare pastor as was my dad. Knowing Greek or even the Bible, doesn’t make a person closer to God. There are scholars who know the Bible and are far from God. The key is to know God.
