That’s a neat project to be involved with, Helen. Do you know if other states have encylopaedias like this, or is North Carolina blazing a trail. Have you ever been to the Cape Hatteras Lighthouse? I love lighthouses, and if I ever get to North Carolina, I would love to see it.

Hi Carol, I have no idea whether other states have similar projects or not. In the summer of 1997, there was a call for writers in our local newspaper. I got in touch with Dr. Powell, by mail in those days, and he assigned me five topics to research and write about. One of my pieces got edited out or absorbed into another article. I was in grad school at the time and didn’t have time to continue, when classes started in the fall. Dr. Powell kept in touch with all of his writers quite well. The book was published last December, and Dr. Powell is having a book signing in Winston-Salem in April. I don’t know whether I’ll get to meet him or not, but I’d like to. The project took him about fifteen years.
I have not been to Cape Hatteras but would like to. Valerie MacEwan who edits the Dead Mule, where I edit poetry, lives near the coast, so I might get down that way sometime to meet her.

Hi Jana, It was fun to work on the research for this book and an honor to be a part of such an important project.
